Born in Grosseibstadt, Germany, on April 27, 1913, he was a son of the late Melchior and Mathilda (Koberlin) Halbing. He immigrated at the age of six with his family to West Haven, CT. After graduating from the West Haven Schools he attended the University of Alabama. Mr. Halbing returned to West Haven and started his career as a police officer with the New York-New Haven-Hartford Railroad. He retired in 1978. Mr. Halbing had lived many years in Mansfield prior to settling in Millis in 1963. He had been a member of the Mansfield Knights of Columbus and the Mansfield Lions Club and for the past several years enjoyed socializing with friends at King’s Terrace. Predeceased by his wife Honora (Kelly) Halbing in 1994, he is survived by two sons, Charles C. Halbing of Old Saybrook, CT, and Stephen M. Halbing of Millis, two granddaughters, Katharine Halbing of Venice Beach, CA, and Elizabeth Halbing of Columbia, SC, his dear friend Helen Burpee of Millis, and many nieces and nephews. He was also a brother of the late Joseph and Henry Halbing and Mary Phelan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 82 Exchange Street, Millis on Friday, July 24th at 10:00a.m. Burial will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visiting hours will be at the Roberts-Mitchell Funeral Home, 90 Curve Street, Millis, on Thursday 4 – 8p.m. If desired, donations may be made in Charles’ memory to Catholic Charities, 75 Kneeland St., 8th Floor, Boston, MA 02111. |
