Pope, Susan E. (Feigenbaum) , of Medfield, 56, passed away peacefully at home on August 23, 2009, having continued to lead a full life after a challenging cancer diagnosis three years ago. Susan was the wife of William F. Pope, and mother of Stephen, Nicholas, and Eleanor Pope.

The daughter of the late Harry and Dorothy Feigenbaum, Susan grew up in Philadelphia, arriving in Medfield in 1978 to begin a 30-year career as a children’s librarian at the Memorial, Wheelock, and Dale Street schools. Her love of literature and passion for teaching inspired generations of students to become lifelong readers.

Named Norfolk County Teacher of the Year in 1996, Susan began the Wheelock Reads program, bringing outstanding children’s authors and illustrators to school. She was also a committed volunteer with Girl Scouts and the Medfield Music Association.

Susan earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Vermont and a master’s degree in library science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The family is greatly indebted to all at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center at Faulkner Hospital for the skill, dedication, and love they provided during this difficult ordeal, and to her support group of fellow cancer patients.

At Susan’s request, a memorial service for her closest family, friends, and colleagues will be held on Saturday, August 29, at 11 a.m. at First Parish Unitarian Universalist, Medfield.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Facing Cancer Together, Inc. (formerly the Wellness Community), Box 600666, Newtonville, MA, 02460.

So very saddened to hear this! I still remember her as Miss Feigenbaum, and the budding romance with "Mr Pope, the gym teacher." Ah, that was the buzz in 5th grade! She was always a favorite amongst the kids: kind, compassionate, remembered who liked to read what kinds of books and always had a recommendation at hand.

You are all in my prayers!

Such sad news to hear. I will never forget Ms. Feigenbaum as the absolute coolest most interesting librarian I have ever met. She had an amazing talent to instill excitement and anticipation for literature! As mentioned by a fellow classmate above, I too remember being witness to the blossoming romance between Mr. Pope and Ms. Feigenbaum as it bloomed within our school halls. My favorite memory was happening across the two as she played away at the piano. . . Condolences and prayers to the Pope Family.

I will never forget Ms. Feigenbaum and Mr. Pope having lunch room duty and thinking what a nice couple they would make. Following them through the years was such a joy for their teaching was best. Then later on I had the opportunity to work at Dale. All my prayers are with you Bill and your family!

erin monahan (erineliz2592@comcast.net):
I remember when Susan Pope cam to Kim's house for a Pj story time. Susan's one rule was that it had to be in the winter because she refused to wear babydolls. She came to read to Kim, Kay, and I. My favorite story that she read was about a cooking pot that doubled everything that went into it. At the end of the story time we got books from her in each was a short message and her signature. To this day I still have and still read the books she gave to me. I also remember how Susan always told the kids in my class and every class stories about Eleanor's toy bunny that she carried every where she went with her. It was always fun to hear Susan's stories.
Then there was the pomegranate that she kept on her desk and the story that went with it. It was a Greek Mythology story. To this day I still love Mythology.

Amy Cohen (indsnw@gmail.com):
My daughter, Emily, was born in 1981 and was in Wheelock K-3. While she was there I volunteered in the Library. My 2 most outstanding memories are:
Mrs. Pope on cross country skis navigating noncholantly around the hallways (I think there was a unit on transportation) and my most favorite, the time she told everyone in the school to bring in empty cereal boxes and filled all the surfaces in the library with them. Then she would snag passin children and have them sort them in a wild variety of ways - how many chocolate, how many with action figures on the front. It went on for some time and everyone was enthralled and learned a lot about sorting data and compiling statistics. She was inspirational and irreverent at the same time. What an amazing, amazing woman.

Eric Seager (alwaysinpogo@yahoo.com):

I am so deeply saddened to hear the news of Susan's passing. During my five years as a teacher at Wheelock, Susan was an inspiring and supportive mentor/colleague. Her genuine love of children, intelligence, sharp wit, commitment to effective instruction, and love of life affected all of her students as well as her co-workers. I have so many fond memories of discussing the quirky children in my classes for whom we both had soft spots. Many laughs were shared as well. What a loss for the Medfield community.

We are so sorry to hear of Susan's passing. Knowing her as a colleague and a friend, she was someone to turn to for ideas and fun. Susan was a clever and creative teacher who engaged and challenged her students. The Potts Family (christine.mccue@verizon.net):
To the entire Pope family,
We were all so sad to hear about Susan, and our hearts and prayers go out to you. Each of our children loved Susan, and her passion for reading and great books was absolutely contagious. As a school volunteer, my most memorable moments were working on the Wheelock video and laughing with Susan about a variety of things -- from parenting two boys and a girl (our similar scenarios) to crazy iMovie snags. She had a wonderful sense of humor and deeply loved her family. The pride on her face as she talked about her kids was clear. It was also easy to see that she was Bill's partner in every sense of the word. It was wonderful to see her at Jerry's recent show at the Zullo Gallery (looking great too), and to hear her talk about her kids' creative pursuits. Susan and Bill have done so much for the town of Medfield and now with her gone, the gap will be clearly felt. She was one very special person and will absolutely be missed. Our thoughts, prayers and support are with you.
Chris, Jerry, Ryan, Sean and Alana

Meg Thomson (and the Thomson family) (megthomson@yahoo.com):
To the entire Pope family,

When we moved to Medfield in 1979, one of my earliest fondest memories is spending time with Susan (Miss Feigenbaum to me then) in the library in Memorial school, then later at Wheelock -- we both shared a love for books, and her passion for literature fueled mine. Throughout my life, she remained in my thoughts and wishes as one of the great influences on my life, and it fills me with tears to know that she is gone. She was a wonderful person, loved by all, and will be missed.

To Bill (of course, another beloved teacher of all of ours) and the kids -- we send love, support, sympathy, and all best wishes, how lucky you were to have Susan in all of your lives. She will be missed.

Love,
Connie, Meg, Brett and Kelly Thomson

Lisa Carr (lcarr07@msn.com):
I am so saddened to hear of Susan's passing. While out of touch our adult lives, she and I grew up together in Pennsylvania. Her parents, Dorothy and Harry, provided us with wonderful adventures throughout our childhood. Susan and I went to summer camp together, and would "vacation" at each others homes. She taught me to ride the subway, enjoy reading for pleasure, and to enjoy the city life. I will always remember our first Junior Symphony Concert that Harry and Dorothy took us to- Susan imagined she was the conductor.
My heartfelt sympathy for your loss. Your family will be in my prayers.

Kim and Brooke Garnett (kbgarnett@msn.com):

Carrie Medina Notaro (carrienotaro@yahoo.com):
Dear Mr. Pope, Stephen, Nicholas and Eleanor,
When I heard the sad news of Miss Feigenbaum's (sorry Mr. Pope, she will in some ways always be Miss Feigenbaum!) passing, my brain could not wrap itself around the reality. The memories that will forever influence my life and the lives of my two children in the way I will read to them, can only be cherished for an eternity. I can still hear her enthusiastic voice filling up the Wheelock School library teaching us all the Dewey Decimal System. The passionate way she would read to us as if we were sitting in her lap all cozied up with such love. She always made me feel so special. She always knew what types of books I enjoyed reading. She would always remember each and every student she encountered and say "Hi" or "Good Morning", look us in the eyes and give us that beautiful smile. Her laugh always gave you that warm and fuzzy feeling inside. She made us all feel like we were all her children. There is no one that could ever fill her shoes. She will never be forgotten!

May you be blessed with experiencing all life has to offer.
Look forward with eagerness and desire.
Stay in the present with enthusiasm and enjoyment.
Remember the past with warmth, love and appreciation for all you have been offered.

May God cherish his new angel he has called upon.
All of my love and support.
~Carrie xoxoxo

The Stenquist Family (belton@earthlink.net):
What a joy Susan was for all. My children are avid readers to this day because of her. She was always about the fun of the story. Many a-day she would let children return a book that didn't suit but had to choose another.
All the "mommy helpers" looked forward to library day.
Thank You Susan, and Gods love to your family.

Karen Marchant and Family (kmarch90@comcast.net):
Knowing that Mrs. Pope fought just as hard with her sickness as she did to inspire children for so many years in Medfield. We are so sorry. This is a great loss for the community, however, her memory will live on forever.
Love and Prayers.
Karen, Michael and Tom Marchant

Kandi (Imbert) Jacques (gkjacques@verizon.net):
Mr. Pope and Family:

I am so very saddened to hear of your loss. I hold such fond memories of Ms. Feigenbaum and the time spent first with her at the library at the Dale Street school and then at Wheelock. She fed my passion for a good book that is still so much of a part of my life today and one that I share with my own children. She had such an uncany ability to know exactly the type of book to suggest for me and never missed the mark. I knew that if she suggested it, I would love it.

I'm sorry that she was taken from you all so soon. I can only hope that the way she inspired so many of the students she taught will bring you comfort. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Kandi

Just last week, 28 years later, I was telling my 5 year old about "someone" I knew who was a librarian and watched Sesame Street when she was in high school. Now I really miss Ms. FigTree but sure haven't forgotten!

Susan Whitten (swhitten@nsboro.k12.ma.us):
I had the distinct please of working with Susan during my years as principal of the Wheelock School. Her presence in the library was an inspiration to students, staff, and parents. She will be greatly missed but had such an incredible influence on all who knew her and learned from her. My thoughts are with the Pope family.

Evan Berry (eberr6@gmail.com):
Dear Mrs. Pope,

As a second grader walking into the library at Wheelock School, I quickly noticed how you were able to relate to kids my age. Every one of your classes was valuable and all students walked out of your library more knowledgeable, happier, and with a greater hunger for reading. You touched every one of us in one way or another. As a sophomore in high school I recall how much of an impact you made on my life inside and outside of the Wheelock School LMC, whether it was your encouragement at a track meet or in kindergarten when I met you- a kind, gentle, down to earth individual before Eleanor and I played leap frog in the hallway on the second floor.

I miss you! You truly inspired all of us!

Love,
Evan

p.s. I've become very fond of pomegranates recently. I saw one at Roche Bros. the other day and decided to pick one up. Remember when you gave us the lesson about Persephone and how Hades tricked her to eat the seeds? You brought one in for all of us to try, and now it's one of my favorite fruits :)
